Winter Stillness

Inner Fire, and the Return of Light

Originally published: Jan 31, 2025

Winter has been working me from the inside out. Not loudly. More like a steady, devotional quiet that clears the noise so I can hear what’s true.

This season has pulled me inward. So, in winter’s rhythm, I find refuge in the stillness, the hush that settles over everything, asking for less performance and more presence. Meanwhile, the long nights and crisp air invite a sacred pause, a chance to truly listen. In that darkness, something potent gathers, like a cocoon where what’s unseen is quietly forming.

Because of this, I feel the pull to retreat. First, to rest. Then, to surrender to the slower pace of the season, not as avoidance, but as devotion. Over time, I’ve come to cherish this time of year as a portal for realignment, a place where I can return to my natural rhythms before the energy of spring begins to rise.

A Convergence of Cycles

Around the time of the New Moon in Aquarius, I felt a distinct inner shift, like a cosmic inhale stirring innovation, clarity, and a different kind of self-honesty. At the same time, we stepped into the Year of the Wood Snake, carrying themes of wisdom, transformation, and deliberate change. Then, with Imbolc just days away, the midpoint between winter and spring, we arrive at a threshold of renewal.

Taken together, these markers, celestial and earthly, remind me of something simple and sacred.

Transformation is not only spiritual. In truth, it’s natural.

Magha Gupt Navratri: The Hidden Work of Devotion

In the Hindu tradition, this seasonal shift is honored through Magha Gupt Navratri, a time of inner purification, devotion, and spiritual discipline dedicated to the Goddess. As I did last year, I’m participating in this observance, aligning with its call for stillness, ritual, and divine connection.

Across cultures, the rhythm repeats: a quiet clearing before renewal. A release of the old so the new can arrive clean.

And on a body level, I can feel the slow awakening, subtle at first, mirroring the Earth stirring beneath its winter blanket. As a result, the sun’s growing strength calls me to stretch, to unfurl from the nourishing belly of Mother Earth, and to begin my ascent.

The Teaching Winter Repeats

A Story of Fire, Rest, and Becoming

To bring this down from the sky into the body, imagine yourself in a winter forest, the air crisp and alive with silence.

Snow clings to the branches, bending them in graceful arcs, holding the quiet memory of seasons past. You inhale deeply, and your breath curls into the air like an offering. All around you, the hush wraps you like a blessing, inviting you inward.

Beneath the frozen ground, unseen roots are already moving, faithfully responding to the promise of light.

And still, your body knows this rhythm too.

Inside you, there’s a quiet stirring. A gentle call from something deep within that’s ready to rise. The Earth doesn’t force its thaw. Instead, it opens in its own timing, allowing warmth to seep in.

Even so, embers glow beneath the surface, steady, patient, insistent.

In other words, this in-between season, winter shifting toward spring, isn’t abrupt. It’s an unfolding. Stillness gives way to movement, and you begin to feel the invitation: rise, stretch, step into who you are becoming.

As the season shifts, the elements whisper their reminders:

  • First, Earth anchors and holds you.

  • Then, Water softens and helps you move what’s been stuck.

  • Next, Air brings breath, perspective, and space.

  • Finally, Fire refines and ignites the path ahead.

Fire is the catalyst of transformation. Not the kind that burns you out, but the kind that purifies. As a result, it clears what no longer belongs so something new can take root.

So I’ll ask you, gently:

What are you ready to release, so your next season has room to breathe?

And how are you tending your inner fire, so it stays steady, not scorched?

This is the heart of Rhythm Ritualz: moving in harmony with your natural cycles, honoring the wisdom in both stillness and change.

New Moon in Aquarius: Seeds of Innovation

With that in mind, this New Moon invites us to see with new eyes. Aquarius asks us to widen our perspective, loosen outdated stories, and remember the freedom of being ourselves.

A few ways to meet this moment:

  • Release what no longer aligns, with tenderness, not shame.

  • Trust the unknown (growth begins in the dark more often than we admit).

  • Plant seeds for a future that feels freer, lighter, and more true.

When did you last let yourself dream without editing the dream down?

Lunar New Year: The Wisdom of the Wood Snake

Alongside that New Moon energy, the turning of the lunar calendar ushers us into the Year of the Wood Snake, a year of quiet transformation, intuitive wisdom, and deliberate movement.

The snake sheds its skin in sacred timing, teaching us to:

Release what no longer fits, without fear, without doubt.

Move with patience and precision, trusting the unseen path ahead.

And,

Choose resilience and inner knowing over rushing for proof.

A lit pillar candle glows warmly as tiny sparks or glittering particles drift around it, with soft golden bokeh lights in the background.
A steady flame in the dark,
warmth, presence, and quiet resilience.

Imbolc and Magha Gupt Navratri: Awakening Inner Fire

As Imbolc approaches, the Earth stirs. The first signs of life press beneath the surface, whispering: it is time.

Imbolc, often associated with Brigid, honors inspiration, renewal, and purification.

Similarly, Magha Gupt Navratri is a devotional portal, a purification of mind, body, and spirit through sacred practice, inner discipline, and reverent connection to the Divine Mother. In that way, its timing alongside the New Moon and Imbolc feels like a reminder that transformation isn’t confined to a single day.

Instead, it’s a continual unfolding.

Simple Rituals for This Threshold

To honor this passage, you might:

Begin by lighting a candle or oil lamp to honor the returning light and the Goddess within.

Then take a cleansing bath to release stagnation and invite fresh energy.

After that, chant or meditate to deepen connection with inner wisdom.

And finally, plant seeds in soil and in soul as a living symbol of what you’re nurturing.

As we honor these universal themes of renewal across traditions, we step deeper into the sacred rhythm of life, remembering: transformation is happening within us, just as it is in the world around us.

Practice With Me: Sunday Soul Flow

If you’d like, this is the living heart of Rhythm Ritualz, and Sunday Soul Flow is a beautiful place to begin.

In practice, gentle movement, breathwork, and meditation support your nervous system and help you come back to center.

A Time to Release and Trust

Ultimately, this moment, New Moon, Lunar New Year, Imbolc, and Gupt Navratri, reminds me that transformation often happens in stillness.

For now, just release.

Trust that even when you can’t see the growth, it’s still happening.

Most of all, especially then.

May this be a season of honoring your rhythms, surrendering to the sacred undoing, and stepping into alignment with the natural cycles of your life.

With reverence for the unfolding mystery,

P. Shananda
